The Song Of 12/26/2016: George Michael – Jesus To A Child

The world is more poor now as it’s lost the great singer who could present many hits… But no… We’ll never hear anything new from George Michael. This year was his last Christmas…

George Michael was an English singer, producer and songwriter. Everyone knows his ‘Last Christmas’ and ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ – the two most famous songs he recorded in a duo Wham! with Andrew Ridgeley in 1980s. Later, in 1990s he started his solo career. Tremendous success! One of the most best-selling British acts, one of the most successful artist to ever live…

I can’t post here something trivial like ‘Last Christmas’. It’s everywhere already.. It’s too harsh btw..

So here is my favourite of his songs – ‘Jesus To A Child’. Beautifully sad melancholic song by which I was charmed as a child. That time I couldn’t understand lyrics but I knew it was something tragically sad about love there.

And I was right about tragedy and love…
The song was written as a tribute to George Michael’s lover Anselmo Feleppa who died from an AIDS-related brain haemorrhage two years after they met.. George couldn’t write anything for more than a year after Feleppa’s death.

Then this song was born..

These bossa nova rhythm and harmony are calm.. sad.. full of pain.. but with a deep understanding of something inevitable.. with hope.

..which sound right today after George Michael’s not among us anymore…

So the words you could not say
I’ll sing them for you
And the love we would have made
I’ll make it for two
For every single memory
Has become a part of me
